The US Masters is the first of golf's four 'majors' and is the only one of the quartet which has a fixed venue.

The tournament is played at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia every year in April and is listed as a ranking event on both the European Tour and PGA Tour, as well as the Japan Golf Tour. The prize fund is $8,000,000 but the most prestigious prize for winning the Masters is the famous Green Jacket.

The distinctive green blazer was first awarded in 1949 and every year tradition dictates that the previous year's Masters winner puts the coat on the shoulders of the new champion. The green jacket is worn by members of Augusta National Golf Club around the club grounds and all winners of the Masters become honorary members of the club. The green jacket is kept, like the Masters trophy, by the winner for a year but then returned to the Augusta National Golf Club although winners are allowed to wear their jackets on any visits to the club.

In addition to the Masters trophy and the Green Jacket, winners of the year's first major title are also awarded a gold medal. The perks for winning the Masters also included lifetime invitation to the tournament, automatic qualification to the other three majors - the US Open, British Open and USPGA - for the next five years and a PGA Tour card for the next five seasons and invitation to the Players Championship for the next five years.

The Masters is the only major tournament that is invitation only and has the smallest field of the four with just 90 players taking part at Augusta National. The top 50 golfers on the PGA Tour automatically receive an invitation, along with all past champions although the tournament directors discourage seniors from participating.

The full criteria for qualification to the US Masters is as follows:

  1. Masters Tournament Champions (Lifetime)
  2. U.S. Open Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  3. The Open Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  4. PGA Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years)
  5. Winners of the Players Championship (Three years)
  6. Current U.S. Amateur Champion (6-A) (Honorary, non-competing after one year); Runner-up (6-B) to the current U.S. Amateur Champion
  7. Current British Amateur Champion (Honorary, non-competing after one year)
  8. Current Asian Amateur Champion
  9. Current U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion

  12. The first 8 players, including ties, in the previous year’s U.S. Open
  13. The first 4 players, including ties, in the previous year’s Open Championship
  14. The first 4 players, including ties, in the previous year’s PGA Championship
