Padraig Harrington is 16/1 to make it three wins in a row at The Open next year, after successfully defending his title at Royal Birkdale on Sunday.

The Irishman had been pushed out to 50/1 before striking a ball on Thursday, following news of his wrist injury. But the reigning champion rewarded punters who kept the faith.

And Ladbrokes, who estimate up to £30 million industry-wide was wagered on the tournament, make the 36-year-old an 14/1 chance to win the USPGA title next month.

The firm’s spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: “Harrington’s injury appeared to have robbed him of the chance to defend his title. We eased him to 50/1 and were hardly knocked over.

“But as his bid got underway, and the troublesome wrist appeared to be holding up, customers flocked back to the champion.

“Tiger Woods’ absence made no impact on turnover. Punters proved that golf is bigger than one man.”

Greg Norman- 500/1 to win the Claret Jug before the final round- is 5/1 to bag this year’s Senior Open.
