British bookmakers are bracing themselves for record breaking betting turnover of over 25 million pounds on the Open Championship, with the absence of Tiger Woods making it the most competitive Open for over a decade.
"This is the most open Open Championship for over a decade since Tiger Woods burst onto the Major golfing scene with his Masters victory in 1997", said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.
"For the last ten years Woods has been a short priced favourite for every Open, with his odds ranging from 6-4 to 4-1, but this year we are betting 10-1 the field making it a wide-open and enthralling betting event", added Clare.
"Over 95% of betting on Major Golf tournaments now takes place the day before the event and during the event itself, but all the early indications suggest we are going to take record breaking levels of business", concluded Clare.
The two best backed players with Coral today have been Jim Furyk who has been cut to 25-1 from 28-1 and Anders Romero who Coral clipped to 33-1 from 40-1.
