Luke Donald beat Lee Westwood in a play-off to win the BMW PGA Championship and take the world number one spot.
Donald had missed out several chances to take top spot from his fellow Englishman in recent weeks, but he finally took his opportunity at Wentworth by keeping his nerve at the first extra hole after both men had finished six-under through 72 holes.
Donald began the final day with a share of the lead alongside Matteo Manassero, but he made a dismal start with successive bogeys at the first and second to slip of the top spot, and it took a birdie at the fourth to stop his slide as he parred the next five holes to make the turn at one-over.
Westwood, meanwhile, recovered from a bogey at the third by making three birdies to take a one-shot lead into his final nine holes, and he piled the pressure onto Donald with two more birdies at the 12th and 15th.
Donald got himself back to par for the day with a birdie at the 10th, and he was then handed a huge boost when Westwood bogeyed the 16th hole. The 33-year-old capitalised with a birdie at the same hole moments later to haul himself level and, with Westwood looking on, he managed to par the final hole, despite finding the bunker, to force extra holes.
The two men returned to the 18th and Westwood saw the world number one spot slip through his fingers as his approach shot to the back of the green spun back into the water. He dropped under penalty and found the green with a nice chip, but the ball just passed the hole. And after Westwood missed his putt, Donald coolly took the title and the ranking but holing a birdie four.
Simon Dyson carded a final-day 69 to finish alone in third place at four-under, with Marcus Fraser (67), Shane Lowry (67) and Rafael Jacquelin (71) a shot further back.
Colin Montgomerie made four birdies and one bogey in a 68 that saw him finish one-under alongside five others, while Volvo Match Play Championship winner Ian Poulter finished down at two-over after a par round. And Rory McIlroy’s disappointing week ended with a 73 that left him three-over.
