World number two Luke Donald is tied for the lead at the halfway stage of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Donald, bidding to replace Lee Westwood as world number one, was unable to follow up his superb seven-under-par first-round, but his one-over 72 was enough to at least keep the Englishman at the summit alongside Alvaro Quiros and Matteo Manassero on six-under.

Donald’s day began badly with a bogey at the par-four first, but he made amends at the par-five fourth by carding his first birdie of the day. However, another bogey at seven meant he made the turn at one-over, and he would have slipped to second had he not cancelled out his bogey at 10 with a birdie at the 17th.

Spaniard Quiros, meanwhile, enjoyed a run of successive birdies over his final three holes, making six in total, as he signed for a four-under-par 67, while Italian Manassero shot a one-under 70 courtesy of four birdies and three bogeys.

Two shots behind them are Jose Manuel Lara (70), David Horsey (68) and Thomas Aiken (67), while top-ranked Westwood bounced back from an opening-round 72 with a two-under 61 that puts hime five shots behind the leaders on one-under.

He is joined by Darren Clarke following the Northern Irishman’s 72, while Volvo World Match Play Championship winner Ian Poulter is a shot further back after racking up five bogeys in a three-over-par 73.
