Iberdrola Open - Chris Wood collapse hands title to Darren Clarke

Related Articles
Darren Clarke capitalised on a final-round collapse by Chris Wood to win the Iberdrola Open in Mallorca, Spain.

Wood began the day with a four-shot lead over the rest of the field, but the 23-year-old had a Sunday to forget with eight bogeys as he was forced to settle for a share of second place with David Lynn on three-under, three shots behind Northern Irishman Clarke.

Clarke told europeantour.com: “It’s a bit of a monkey to get off my back after three years not winning so it’s good.

“At the same time I feel a lot for Chris Wood – he’s a young guy, a great player and I’ve been in his position before.”

He added: “It’s a tough day for Chris and I really feel for him.

“I don’t think the conditions were great for him today because he had to protect a lead but I do think that we don’t have to worry about him. He will win and it will be sooner rather than later.”

Clarke needed just three holes to move within one shot of the overnight leader, with the Northern Irishman making a birdie at the par-four third while Chris Wood notch back-to-back bogeys at the second and third holes.

Clarke parred the remaining six holes of his outward nine while Wood shot two birdies and a third bogey, but the Ryder Cup vice-captain looked to have blown his chances of a first European Tour title since 2008 when he found the water at the 11th and carded a double-bogey.

However, Wood fell apart in spectacular fashion by making back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13, and he then endured a run of three successive bogeys between 15 and 17 to hand the title to Clarke, who made birdies at the 14th and 15th to win his 13th event on this tour.

Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth shot a final-round 70 to finish in fourth place at two-under, while Paul Lawrie, Shane Lowry, Jose Maria Olazabal and Graeme Storm were the only other players to finish below par at one-under.
