The former Ryder Cup player from Mansfield, nine times a runner-up on the tour, is bidding to take advantage of many top stars being in action at the Players’ Championship in Florida.

He added a seven-under-par round of 65 to his opening 66 to edge ahead of Swedish duo Magnus Carlsson and Joakim Lagergren and another Englishman, Andy Sullivan.

Wilson - who has slumped to No 475 in the world rankings, lost his tour card last year and did not play at the qualifying school to clear up some health issues - was the favourite on Betfair ahead of Carlsson.

The 31-year-old, who played in the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla, has still not carded a bogey in the tournament.

“I played nicely,” said Wilson. “The fact I haven’t had a bogey in two rounds shows I’m playing solidly and sensibly.

“I actually feel like I left a few shots out there. I missed three putts from inside six feet. 

“There’s a long way to go and the scoring will carry on being low, but I’ll keep pushing on trying to make birdies. There will inevitably be some mistakes at the weekend but it’s just a question of trying to limit them. You have to be patient.”

Wilson credited his return to form to a technical adjustment, adding: “I changed the loft in my putter and it’s working. The less I think about the set-up the better and if you know putts are rolling well it makes a big difference.”
