Robert Rock is the 7/1 favourite with Stan James to win the Spanish Open in Seville after opening with a four-under-par round of 68 to sit one shot off the lead.

The hero of this year’s Abu Dhabi Championship, in which he fended off a challenge from playing partner Tiger Woods, has only Shaun Micheel ahead of him after carding eagles at the 13th and 16th holes.

Micheel, the 2003 US PGA champion but now down to No 608 in the world rankings, had eight birdies and three bogeys in his 67 and is 22/1 for the title with Stan James.

He no longer holds a full PGA Tour card yet is eligible to play on the European Tour as his US PGA Championship success earned him a 10-year exemption.

Tied for second place alongside Rock are Sheffield’s Danny Willett (10/1) and Challenge Tour graduate Jorge Campillo of Spain (25/1).

The 15/2 second favourite is Ryder Cup player Francesco Molinari of Italy, one of six players tied for sixth position on two under par.

They are just behind Matthew Baldwin, who claimed fifth place on his own when he birdied his last hole to go three under.

Molinari set the early clubhouse target as the tournament began in wet and windy conditions even though he three-putted for bogey from just seven feet on his penultimate hole.

Also in the group alongside Molinari were his 19-year-old compatriot Matteo Manassero, who is an 11/1 chance to lift the trophy, and Dubai Desert Classic champion Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
