Irish Contenders at the Open Championship

James Cameron - 14 Jul 2008

Paddy Power are running scared of the Irish contenders ahead of this week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Reigning champion, Padraig Harrington, flushed from his recent success at the Irish PGA, is on course to cost the Irish bookie in excess of £4,000,000 should he successfully defend his Open Championship crown.

To guarantee a week of sleepless nights for Paddy Power, they are also paying out on the first six finishers in the Open and with Padraig Harrington at mouth-watering odds of 18/1, patriotic Irish punters are wasting no time taking advantage.

Paddy Power was also forced to slash the odds on Harrington’s fellow countryman Graeme McDowell from 75/1 to 45/1 after he took home the silverware at the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond yesterday.

Paddy Power said: "We’re still counting the cost of the damage that Harrington did to us last year. Every Irish person seemed to have a few quid on him and this year seems no different with a frenzy of ante-post support for the Dubliner already. Our six place payout could cost us dearly!"
