Last night bookmakers across Ireland were once again ‘putt’ to the sword by Padraig Harrington. Fresh after his success in the British Open, the 37 year old Dubliner defied the odds to become the first European golfer in 78 years to win the USPGA Championship.
The Irish golfing sensation was a 20-1 shot with William Hill prior to the tournament, and the bookmakers have revealed that there were no shortage of takers of those lofty odds.
William Hill’s Irish spokesman Tony Kenny commented “Thanks to Padraig - our Irish operation has taken a massive hit in the last couple of months” He continued “A huge chunk of the bets we took on the USPGA were on Harrington, and our Irish business will probably end up paying out another high six figure”
Harrington is now a 1-100 chance to be named RTE Sports Personality for the second consecutive year, and is 125-1 to complete a Grand Slam by winning the next two majors.
“The guy is just sensational, and is victory in the USPGA has elevated him to Global sports superstar status” He continued “He’s 1-100 to be crowned RTE Sports personality of the year, but realistically he should be even shorter than that!”
