Andalucian Open Tips

Ross Aylward - 24 Mar 2009

The European Tour hits mainland Spain this week for the Andalucian Open, which is being played at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla for the first time.

Course: Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, Seville , Spain (par-72, 7,140 yards)
A Jose Maria Olazabal-designed course which last year hosted the Open de Espana, won by Irishman Peter Lawrie, and before that the Open de Sevilla in 2004. Palm and fir trees are in abundance, while water is in play on six holes, including the closing par-4 18th. With the rough quite high this week, accuracy off the tee will be all important.

Ross’ Top Tip: Soren Hansen @ 18/1 bet365
The bookmakers are struggling to find a favourite but, at 18/1, the Dane is definitely the man to beat. After an excellent 2008, which saw him qualify for the Ryder Cup, he has been playing some nice golf since the turn of the year and really caught the eye when shooting a third round 64 on his way to 13th place at Doral last time out. As consistency is his middle name, there’s no reason why he can’t go well again this week and the course will hold no terrors for him as he finished third to Peter Lawrie here last year.

Next Best: Peter Hedblom @ 70/1 Stan James
The Swede wouldn't win any awards for consistency, but he must like the Spanish weather as he's played some of his best golf in the country. Twice a runner-up in the Open de Espana and again in last season's Castello Masters, he was also a fast-finishing seventh on this course in 2004. In which case, this week might be the best time to catch him and the price is right.

Outsider: Callum Macauley @ 90/1 Stan James
All eyes will be on Colin Montgomerie as he tees it up for the 500th time as a professional, but fellow Scot Macauley could be the star turn this week. The youngster was playing only his second event as a pro at last week’s Madeira Open but you wouldn’t have guessed it the way he birdied the last six holes (and eight of the last nine) to finish one shot out of the playoff. The winner Estanislao Goya is a 40/1 shot this week, so the 90/1 looks generous.

Tournament Lay (Betfair): Miguel Angel Jimenez for a place
The Spaniard will be combining playing with promoting and organising this week's event, which could prove to be a distraction.

Tournament Match Bet: Soren Hansen to beat Peter Hanson @ 10/11 Victor Chandler

Recommended Bets:
Soren Hansen 2pts each way @ 18/1 bet365
Peter Hedblom 1pt each way @ 70/1 Stan James
Callum Macauley 1pt each way @ 90/1 Stan James
