Austrian Open: Welsh Wonder

Ross Aylward - 15 Sep 2009

This week's Austrian Open is devoid of star names, leaving the admirably consistent (but rare winner) Soren Hansen to carry the baton of favouritism.

The Course: Fontana GC, Vienna , Austria (par-71, 7,066 yards)
It's short and relatively easy so scoring is again likely to be low, although the rough is higher than in previous years due to the event being moved back from June. There's water everywhere - well, on more than half the holes, including the closing two - while recent heavy rain has left the fairways quite soft. There are just three par-5's -all reachable in two - the 9th, 15th and the 18th. The winner is likely to be high up in the GIR stats rather than for driving distance.

Ross' Top Tip: Bradley Dredge @ 16/1 bet365
The Welshman may not be as consistent as Hansen but he's in-form and is double the price, so he'll do for me. After making him my headline tip for the European Masters at 40/1 a couple of weeks ago, it was galling to see him shoot four rounds in the 60's (including a brace of 65's) and still finish two shots adrift of winner Alexander Noren. Still, the place part of the bet was chunky enough and, in what is a much weaker field, that looks worth re-investing.

Next Best:  Alex Cejka @ 25/1 Sportingbet
PGA Tour stalwart Cejka is making the effort to play his second European Tour event in a row and that's significant. Certainly, last week's tenth in Cologne will give him plenty of confidence going into this week and a repeat of that effort, or indeed his recent fifth in the Reno Taho Open, should be good enough to see him in contention for a second week running.

Outsider: Steven O'Hara @ 80/1 Skybet
It's all about hitting GIR regulation this week and the Scotsman does that 75.9% of the time - according to the Tour's official stats - the same percentage as favourite Soren Hansen. Of course, that doesn't make him the winner but factor in his recent performance at Gleaneagles where he finished sixth, and the 80/1 suddenly looks very tasty indeed (half those odds in places).

Tournament Lay: Soren Hansen (win market on Betfair)
The Dane deserves to be favourite on his all-round form - six top-10 finishes in his last 10 starts - but he invariably finds a way of getting beat and looks a lay in the win market. He found last week's course "silly-easy" and led by three at one stage (traded at 2/1 on Betfair), but had to settle for a tie for third in the end. That said, you'll be lucky to find a bookie offering him in a match bet this week.

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Bradley Dredge to beat Markus Brier (three time winner here but struggling for form) @ 4/5 Totesport

Recommended Bets:
Bradley Dredge 2pts each-way @ 16/1 bet365
Alex Cejka 1pt each-way @ 25/1 Sportingbet
Steven O'Hara 1pt each-way @ 80/1 Skybet
