BMW PGA Championship Tips

Ross Aylward

Players either love or hate Wentworth and Cabrera, whose nickname is "the Duck", really takes off around here.

You wouldn't believe it from the weather, but the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth heralds the the start of the golfing summer in Europe!

The Course: West Course, Wentworth, Surrey (par-72, 7,320 yards)
For the players, the course is a bit like Marmite - they either love it or hate it! To look at, it's stunning and there are few golfing locations to match it for grandeur. Less grand are the greens which have come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. They are due to be relaid after this event, which can't come soon enough for the likes of Padraig Harrington (who is taking the week off) and Retief Goosen. They will just have to make their scores then on the relatively easy four par-5's, the 4th, 12th, 17th and 18th.

Ross' Top Tip: Angel Cabrera @ 18/1 bet365
Like I said, players either love or hate Wentworth and Cabrera, whose nickname is "the Duck", really takes off around here. The Argentine double Major winner was sixth on his debut in 2007, runner-up in 2001 and 2004, before winning the following year. He was also fifth in 2007 so at 18/1 he looks a rock-solid each-way investment.

Next Best: Luke Donald @ 25/1 Coral
The Englishman lacks the killer instinct in the Majors but he looks worthy of support on a track that clearly suits. His course form reads tied-18th, 5th, tied-25th, 7th and tied-3rd last year, while his recent runner-up finish on the PGA Tour at Hilton Head suggests he's finding his game again after being hampered by a wrist injury.

Outsider: Marc Warren @ 100/1 Boylesports (1/4 odds, SIX places!)
We've had our fair share of shocks here in recent years with both Scott Drummond and Andrew Oldcorn winning at triple-figure odds. And, after last week's 999/1 winner Shame Lowry, it would be wise not to put a line through any player this week. Robert Rock, runner-up to Lowry, could go well again at a price (90/1 Victor Chandler), but can he produce it two weeks running? Instead, I'll take the triple-figure odds on last week's fourth who can boast a couple of top-30 finishes in this event. Boylesports' sixth place could come in handy.

Tournament Lay (Betfair): Retief Goosen
The South African will be many people's fancy this week as he's playing with plenty of confidence right now. However, he's no fan of the Wentworth greens and a couple of missed short putts early on will get him grumbling and slipping down the leaderboard, hopefully.

Tournament 72-Hope Match Bet: Robert Karlsson to beat Retief Goosen @ 10/11 Ladbrokes

Recommended Bets:
Angel Cabrera 2pts each-way @ 18/1 bet365
Luke Donald 11/2 pts each-way @ 25/1 Coral
Marc Warren 1pt each-way @ 100/1 Boylesports (1/4 odds, six places)
