Ballantine’s Championship Tips

Ross Aylward

With the Race to Dubai adding extra significance this week, a number of big names have jetted over for this week’s Ballantine’s Championship, played at the Pinx Golf Club on the South Korean island of Jeju.

The Course: Pinx GC, Jeju island, South Korea (par-72, 7,345 yards)
This island course is hosting this event for the second year in succession and is likely to be in better condition than last year, when the winning score was 24-under, as the tournament comes six weeks later in the season. Six of the holes now have the added protection of new trees but the difficulty of the course this week will be determined by the strength of the wind, which is forecast to get up at the weekend. There are four par-5’s - the 4th, 9th, 10th and 16th, the longest at 563 yards.

Ross’ Top Tip: Graeme McDowell @ 16/1 Ladbrokes
The Top European at this year’s Masters is back to defend his title and, with the trio in front of him in the betting - Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Ernie Els - yet to have a sighter of this course, he looks a cracking bet at 16’s

Next Best: Johan Edfors @ 30/1 Blue Square
I’m almost skint from backing the Swede in main Tour events but his confidence will have been boosted by a recent win on the Asian Tour (when I wasn’t on), so I’m prepared to give him another chance, especially as he made the frame here last year.

Outsider: Rhys Davies @ 80/1 Coral
The Welshman had a stellar amateur career and has impressed with his efforts so far on the European Tour – runner-up in the Thailand Open and tied-6th in Valencia a few weeks ago. He’s sure to go on to greater things and, while the opposition is probably a bit too classy for him here, 20/1 a place has a nice ring to it.

Ross’ 72-Hole Match Bet: Graeme Mc Dowell to beat Ernie Els @ 10/11 bet365

Tournament Lay (Betfair): Lee Westwood (if in contention on Sunday)
Ought to go close this week but he struggles to put together a meaningful Sunday round when in contention so is not one to trust at short odds.

Recommended Bets:
Graeme McDowell 2pts each-way @ 16/1 Ladbrokes
Johan Edfors 1pt each-way @ 30/1 Blue Square
Rhys Davies 1pt each way @ 80/1 Coral
