Canadian Open: Kim for Birdie Blitz

Ross Aylward - 22 Jul 2009

This is the 100th edition of this historic tournament; let's just hope the winner isn't a similar price!

The Course: Glen Abbey GC, Oakville, Ontario, Canada (par-71, 7,222 yards)
The first course that Jack Nicklaus built back in 1976, Glen Abbey has hosted 24 Canadian Opens, including last year when Chez Reavie (who?) won. It's not long by modern standards, so the emphasis is very much on accurate iron play into the small and undulating greens. It suits faders (left to right hitters) of the ball. There are three par-5's - the 5th, 13th and 18th.

Ross' Top Tip: Anthony Kim @ 20/1 Betfred
There'll be plenty of birdies on offer this week and Kim, who ranks second on Tour for birdie conversion, should have his fair share. That was certainly the case for three rounds last year (65-69-64) on his first visit but poor putting contributed to a final round 75 and a tie for eighth. He may have missed the cut at our Open but, apart from that quintuple-bogey nine early in his second round, he didn't play at all badly, and lets not forget how well he was playing in his three previous events (third, tied-11th, tied-16th).

Next Best: Aaron Baddeley @ 35/1 bet365
The Aussie does well on medium-length courses that feature small, undulating greens - like this one - and will be well rested having had last week off. Granted, his form has been patchy since changing swing coaches earlier this year, but ninth last time out at the John Deere Classic suggests his game's coming right.

Outsider: Bryce Molder @ 60/1 Skybet
At 60/1, Molder just about sneaks into the 'outsider' category and a lively one at that. He really impressed me last week at Turnberry - a third round 67 being the highlight - and although fading into a tie for 43rd, he will take plenty of positives from that. Previously, he was a collective 41-under in his four starts going into the Open, so don't be surprised to see a lot of him over the weekend.

Tournament Lays (Betfair): Luke Donald & Mike Weir
Donald will be a popular choice with punters after his Open fifth, but he rarely wins and this is his first look at the course so, at the odds, I'm a layer not a player. Same with Weir, who has never won his home tournament and the pressure of trying is always going to be too much.

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Aaron Baddeley to beat Bubba Watson @ 5/6 Stan James

Recommended Bets:
Anthony Kim 1pt each-way @ 20/1 Betfred
Aaron Baddeley 1pt each-way @ 35/1 bet365
Bryce Molder 1pt each-way @ 60/1 Skybet
