European Masters: Welshman for Flying Start in Cup Race

Ross Aylward - 1 Sep 2009

What makes him a standout bet this week, though, is his strong course record of winner in 2006, 3rd in 2007 and 4th in 2002.

The European Masters marks the start of Ryder Cup qualification and that has tempted some of the bigger names to the mountains of Crans in the hope of getting off to a flying start.

The Course: Crans-sur-Sierre GC, Switzerland (par-71, 6,822 yards)
Crans is short by modern day standards and the altitude - Crans is 5000 feet above sea level - means it plays even shorter as the ball travels 10% further in the thin mountain air. That makes club selection tricky which, combined with the difficult to read greens - many of which are like upturned saucers - favours players with previous course experience. All four of the par-5's - the 1st (easiest), 9th, 14th and 15th - provide good birdie / eagle chances.

Ross' Top Tip: Bradley Dredge @ 35/1 Stan James
The Welshman has had a pretty mediocre 2009, but he did post his best finish of seventh at the recent KLM Open and was playing well in round one last week until a score-wrecking nine on a par-5. What makes him a standout bet this week, though, is his strong course record of winner in 2006, 3rd in 2007 and 4th in 2002. Furthermore, with the 2010 Ryder Cup being staged on home soil at Celtic Manor, he'll have an even bigger incentive to play well and make the team.

Next Best: Martin Erlandsson @ 50/1 Sportingbet
The Swede has been playing some nice golf of late with form figures of 4-22-15-2 and his confidence will be sky high after a near faultless final round 62 in Perthshire. The winner there was his compatriot Peter Hedblom and that might just inspire Erlandsson, who finished seventh at Crans in 2007, to success this week.

Outsider: Ricardo Gonzalez @ 80/1 bet365
A winner here in 2001, the Argentine is having his best season for a while and recently won the SAS Masters in good style. One of the longest hitters on Tour, he'll be be playing controlled short irons into most of the greens this week and that should convert into plenty of birdies. At 80/1, he's a very lively outsider.

Tournament Lay (Betfair): Lee Westwood
No doubt the Englishman will play this week, as he has done for most of the summer, but he's been struggling to finish the job on  Sunday and is without a win in nearly two years.

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Bradley Dredge to beat Oliver Wilson Evens @ Totesport

Recommended Bets:
Bradley Dredge 1pt each-way @ 35/1 Stan James
Martin Erlandsson 1pt each-way @ 50/1 Sportingbet
Ricardo Gonzalez 1pt each-way @ 80/1 bet365
