Justin Timberlake Open Tips

Ross Aylward - 15 Oct 2008

The Fall Series continues with a right mouthful of a tournament - the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin. Oh well, it's all in a good cause, and even the bookmakers are feeling generous this week! Justin Timberlake is hosting the event in case you were wondering.

The Course: TPC at Summerlin, Las Vegas , Nevada (par-72, 7,243 yards)
A desert course, built to accommodate golfing fans with plenty of strategically placed spectator mounds. The course is fairly accommodating too. Think generous fairways and larger than average Bentgrass greens, while even the ball goes further due to the altitude. Expect a birdie-fest!

Ross' Top Tip: Hunter Mahan @ 20/1 Betfred, bet365, Paddy Power
Why is Mahan even teeing up here you may ask? He has no concerns about his card for next season, unlike many players this week, and has already earned plenty of dosh this season. In fact, no-one would blame him for having a few weeks off, especially after his heroics at the Ryder Cup. Perhaps it's the opportunity to bask in the adulation of the galleries for one more week, but a more likely reason is that he's hungry for his first individual win of the season. Take the hint, take the 20/1, which looks incredibly generous in a field short on quality.

Next Best: Zach Johnson @ 22/1 VCbet
The former Masters champion has had a poor season by his standards, until last week that is. After being overlooked by Paul Azinger for one of the Ryder Cup wild-card places, he decided to take seven weeks off to work on his game - "I made the commitment to go back to what I used to do, the way I'm supposed to do it - ball-striking and putting." Whatever he did, it worked a treat as the form he showed when winning last week's Texas Open (closing rounds of 62 and 64 for a two shot victory) would not have let his country down if he'd been chosen. In this similarly low-scoring event, he could easily follow up.

Outsider: Jeff Overton @ 50/1 Ladbrokes
Jeff who you may ask? Hardly a household name but you could say the same about Andrew Stolz and Wes Short Jr, two recent winners of this event who have never been heard of again. Like them, Overton would be a first-time winner but he has shown enough in recent weeks (10th and 5th in his last two starts) to suggest he can win one of these end-of-season events, especially if the class acts like Mahan and Johnson fail to perform. What's more, he finished tied-19th here last year after opening with a 65, so he's clearly a fan of the course.

Tournament Lay:
I wouldn't be confident about laying anyone this week, although I have given up on some of these ever winning again. Perennial losers Pat Perez and Bo Van Pelt have had plenty of my money over the past few seasons, but you can guarantee that as soon as I put them up as lays they will shoot the lights out!

Ross' Match Bet: Zach Johnson to beat Rory Sabbatini (threw away a winning chance last week) @ 10/11 Boylesports

Recommended Bets:

Hunter Mahan 2pts each way @ 20/1 Betfred, bet365, Paddy Power
Zach Johnson 1pt each way @ 22/1 VCbet
Jeff Overton 1pt each way @ 50/1 Ladbrokes
