Quail Hollow Championship Tips

Ross Aylward - 28 Apr 2009

This week's Quail Hollow (formerly Wachovia) Championship sees bitter rivals Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson locking horns again after their thrilling eyeball-to-eyeball Masters duel - but will they be duelling out the finish?

Course: Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, NC (par-72, 7,442 yards)
The course is long even by modern day standards, but it cannot be easily overpowered and, with plenty of trouble to be found off the tee, the emphasis is more on accuracy. The par-5's are the 5th, 7th, 10th and 15th, which offers the last realistic birdie chance due to a tough finish.

Ross' Top Tip: Anthony Kim @ 28/1 bet365
Woods and Mickelson dominate the betting but, as in the Masters, it could pay to look elsewhere for the winner and Kim looks the man most likely to topple them. While the big two were going birdie crazy in the final round at Augusta, Kim had already made a record 11 birdies in the second round on his way to finishing 20th, which suggests he's coming back to form after an indifferent start to the season. If that's the case, the others had better watch out as he destroyed the field by five here last year.

Next Best: Nick Watney @ 55/1 Boylesports
Watney was my top tip last week so it was disappointing to see him miss the cut on a course he has won on. Still, that's no reason to desert him as he has been in blinding form all season - eight top-25 finishes in nine starts going into last week - and this week's track ought to suit his excellent long game.

Outsider: Steve Flesch @ 125/1 bet365
Another ex-tip but this time for the Heritage at Hilton Head, where he proceeded to miss the cut, which was disappointing after his excellent tied-6th finish in the Masters. Still, he's worth persevering with as he also played well recently at Innisbrook (7th), which is not dissimilar to Quail Hollow, and also finished fifth here in 2004.

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Anthony Kim to beat Jim Furyk @ 10/11 William Hill

Recommended Bets:
Anthony Kim 2pts each-way @ 28/1 bet365
Nick Watney 1pt each-way @ 55/1 Boylesports
Steve Flesch 1pt each-way @ 125/1 bet365
