Spanish Open Tips

Ross Aylward - 28 Apr 2009

There's a decent field assembled for this week's Spanish Open headed by home boy Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who has finished second three times in as many tournaments - can he go one better this week?

The Course: PGA Golf de Catalunya, Girona, Spain (par-72, 7,172 yards)
A very picturesque course with spectacular views of the Pyrenees. Accuracy off the tee will be important this week as many of the fairways are tree-lined and the rough is quite punishing. There are four par-5's - the 3rd, 7th, 12th and the 15th, which at just 492 yards provides the best birdie / eagle chances.

Top Tip: Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano @ 16/1 Stan James
The 28-year-old is making a habit of coming second but it at least shows he is playing well and each-way backers would be showing a handsome profit over the past month. Of course, there is always the danger of fatigue but you could have said that last week and it didn't stop him from contending.

Next Best: Danny Willett @ 40/1 Coral
The Englishman, who most recently finished eighth in last week's Ballantine's Championship, is a winner waiting to happen and it could come this week as he is one of the few in the field with any solid course form having finished fourth in Q-School, which involved playing six rounds round here at the end of last year.

Outsider: Michael Hoey @ 50/1 Sportingbet
Another graduate from Q-School (finished eighth) and is already a winner on the main Tour, having beaten Fernandez-Castano (who else!) in a play-off for the Portuguese Open. With that win under his belt and valuable course experience to draw on this week, he looks cracking each-way value at 50/1 (35/1 in places).

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Danny Willett to beat Chris Wood @ 10/11 Victor Chandler

Recommended Bets:
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano 2pts each-way @ 16/1 Stan James
Danny Willett 1pt each-way @ 40/1 Coral
Michael Hoey 1pt each-way @ 50/1 Sportingbet
