Spanish Open Tips

Ross Aylward - 27 Apr 2010

The European Tour is back on the mainland this week, with the Spanish Open from the Real Golf Club near Seville featuring Alvaro Quiros, Miguel Angel Jimenez and the Molinari brothers, Francesco and Edoardo.

The course, which measures around 7,100 yards, was last used for this event in 2008 when Peter Lawrie was the winner. It was also used for last year's Open de Andalucia, won by Soren Kjeldsen. After one of the wettest springs on record, the rough is very thick so accuracy off the tee will be very important. The weather is set to be warm and sunny.

Ross' Three Off The Tee:-

Francesco Molinari @ 16/1 Ladbrokes
No apologies for tipping up this week's favourite as the Italian is one of the few real class in the field and will be fresher than most after skipping the last two events in the Far East. Sure, he will have his sights on his national event next week but he's a contender every time he tees it up and the last time he played on Spanish soil - the Open de Andalucia at the end of March - he finished in a tie for fourth.

David Drysdale @ 90/1 Boylesports
The Scot finished second to Kjeldsen here in 2009; one of five top-four finishes he's registered since the beginning of last year, the most recent being his third place finish in the 2010 Avantha Masters. He filled the same spot at the Madrid Masters played last October and that event is played on quite a forgiving track, like this one. A coincidence? I don't think so and the 90/1 is massive (66/1 in places).

James Morrison @ 100/1 Betfred
Another silly price on a player who is in the form of his life having bagged his maiden Tour win in Portugal just two week's ago. And it's not like that win came out of the blue as he'd previously finished tied-4th in Africa and tied-6th in Andalucia this season. OK, back-to-back wins might be asking for too much from the rookie but 25/1 a place has a nice ring to it.

Bubbling Under: Stephen Dodd (80/1 Blue Square)
Finished 14th here in 2009 and his two most recent finishes - tied-23rd in Andalucia and second in China - suggest he's coming back to the sort of form that won him three Tour titles in 2005 and 2006.

Punters Beware: Alvaro Quiros
The Spaniard is classy on his day but is not known for his straight driving and that could spell trouble this week.
