The Masters: First Round Leader Tips

Ross Aylward

This market tends to mirror the outright prices but a completely different approach is needed.

There’s no point just backing the best players as the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson rarely make all to win, and wire-to-wire Masters winners are even rarer – 12 months ago Trevor Imelmann became the first man since Ben Crenshaw in 1984 to hold the first round lead and win.

So, I certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to back Woods as, despite his excellent record at Augusta, he has never broken 70 in round one and, besides, he’s hardly value in this market at 5/1 (William Hill).

Instead, look to back those players who are traditionally fast starters and, just as important, those players with an early tee off time as conditions (weather, greens) tend to worsen as the day progresses, meaning the average scores go up.

Looking at those players with a morning tee off time, the one that jumps off the page is JUSTIN ROSE at 40/1 (Paddy Power, Victor Chandler). The Englishman is in fine form having posted top-15 finishes in his last three state-side tournaments and is traditionally a fast starter at Augusta, finishing day one in front three times in the last five years.

Recommended Bet:

Justin Rose 1pt each-way @ 40/1 Paddy Power, Victor Chandler
