Transitions Championship Tips
Yet another new name for this event which was formerly the PODS Championship and before that the Chrysler Championship. The surroundings are much more familiar, though, as it is being played on the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.
The Course: Copperhead Course, Westin Innisbroook Resort, FLA (par-71, 7,340 yards)
Tougher than your normal style of resort golf and the swirling wind can make it even more difficult. Rather than power off the tee, the emphasis is very much on keeping it in play and finding the Bermuda greens, which are smaller than average, quick and tricky to read. There are four par-5's - 1st, 5th (the longest at 605 yards), 11th and 14th.
Ross’ Top Tip: Jim Furyk @ 12/1 Ladbrokes
No prizes for originality but there's no great strength in depth this week and jolly Jim looked to be coming to the boil nicely for this when putting some pressure on leading duo Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney at last week's CA-Championship. A reproduction of that effort will make him hard to beat on a course that will play to his strengths.
Next Best: Tim Clark @ 35/1 Victor Chandler (only 20/1 with Ladbrokes)
The South African also played well last week finishing with a pair of 69's to tie for 27th place. That was his 'worst' finish in his five strokeplay events since winning the Australian Open in December and that elusive first US Tour win is surely just around the corner. Plays tough courses well so this week's track is perfect.
Outsider: John Senden @ 55/1 Stan James
Talk about horses for courses. The Aussie has found only one too good here in 2007 and last year and his current game isn't in bad shape either. Certainly, his 27th place at the Honda Classic, ninth in the Bob Hope and 17th in Phoenix suggest he's in good enough form to make another bid for the title.
First Round Leader: Rod Pampling @ 40/1 Stan James (1/4 odds, 1.2.3.4)
The Australian Masters champion was tempting in the outright market as he's had two top-six finishes here and a string of low rounds, but he's not the greatest under pressure so the best time to catch him might be early.
Ross’ 72-Hole Match Bet: Jim Furyk to beat Steve Stricker @ 10/11 Victor Chandler
Recommended Bets:
Jim Furyk 2pts each way @ 12/1 Ladbrokes
Tim Clark 1pt each way @ 35/1 Victor Chandler
John Senden 1pt each way @ 55/1 Stan James
Rod Pampling (First Round Leader) 1pt each way @ 40/1 Stan James (1/4 odds, 1.2.3.4)
