Travelers Championship: Rest Easy With Toms
This week's layout will suit him more and I fancy he can improve on his sixth place finish here in 2007.
Fortunately, those players who played in Monday's final round of the US Open don't have too far to travel for this week's Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, Connecticut.
The Course: TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut (par-70, 6,844 yards)
As one of the shortest tracks on Tour, there's no great premium on driving distance. The bentgrass greens are smaller than average and are shaped like upturned saucers, so there’s considerable reward for iron play, which makes this essentially a second-shot course. That said, it often boils down to a putting contest, and low scores are common. There are just two par-5’s - the 6th and 13th.
Ross' Top Tip: David Toms @ 25/1 Paddy Power
Missed the cut last week but that's a blessing in disguise as he will be fresher than most, and he did play some great golf the week before when runner-up in the St Jude and when shooting 69 in the first round at Bethpage. This week's layout will suit him more and I fancy he can improve on his sixth place finish here in 2007.
Next Best: Steve Marino @ 40/1 Ladbrokes
When the scoring is low, you can almost bank on Marino's name being up on the leaderboard. Has the third most rounds in the 60s on the Tour this season and has scored in the 60's in nine of his last 12 rounds. Recently lost a play-off at the recent Crowne Plaza Invitational, so he wouldn't be winning out of turn and, like Toms, he will be nice and fresh.
Outsider: Matt Bettencourt @ 135/1 Stan James
Not even a household name in his own household but is beginning to make a name for himself on the main Tour after being one of the top qualifiers from the 2008 Nationwide Tour. Showed his fifth place finish at Memorial was no fluke by finishing in the top-10 last week and, providing that hasn't taken too much out of him, there's no reason he can't belie his odds again.
Tournament Lay (Betfair): Hunter Mahan
Predictably short this week based on his course record of 2-1-2 but if he's not shattered by his US Open exertions, I'm Tiger Woods!
Tournament Match Bet: Steve Marino to beat Dustin Johnson @ 10/11 bet365
