Verizon Heritage Tips

Ross Aylward

The Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links will do well to match the excitement of last week's Masters. However, after the success of Angel Cabrera at triple-figure odds, it might at least provide punters with some respite.

The Course: Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head Island, SC (par-71, 6,973 yards)
This Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus-designed track is the closest the Americans have to a seaside links. It's relatively short by modern standards and has just three par-5’s (2nd, 5th and 15th) so long hitters don't enjoy any significant advantage. Instead, with green sizes considerably smaller than average, accurate ball striking is required, and the winner will have to be on top of their game with the flat stick - the last three winners have taken just 97 putts all week!

Ross' Top Tip: Aaron Baddeley @ 25/1 Paddy Power
The key to finding the winner here is to back those players who played well at Augusta without being in serious contention, and the Aussie fits the bill perfectly. His closing 69 was good enough for 17th spot and he's currently ranked 4th in this season's putting stats, a key asset around here. At 25/1, he's simply crying out to be backed at a venue where he has been first, tenth and second in the last three years.

Next Best: Davis Love III @ 45/1 bet365
After missing out on the Masters, the five-time champ here will be chomping at the bit to play one of his favourite events. In addition to his five wins, he can boast a second, a third, a fourth and a fifth place finish and either one of those this week will ensure a tidy profit for his backers.

Outsider: Steve Flesch @ 66/1 Skybet
The left-hander will still be on a high after banking a nice cheque for sixth place last week, without putting himself under too much pressure, and his excellent scrambling skills (2nd in the stats at Augusta) will stand him in good stead when chipping just off this week's small greens. With some poor prices around on the favourites (see below), he's excellent value at 66's.

Tournament Lay (Betfair): Jim Furyk for a place
Gentleman Jim has played well here many times before, but his best efforts have come after an ordinary week at the Masters and, although he dropped to tenth after a final-day 73, he was bang there in contention after three rounds last week.

Ross' Match Bet: Aaron Baddeley to beat Ernie Els @ 10/11 Stan James

Recommended Bets:
Aaron Baddeley 2pts each-way @ 25/1 Paddy Power
Davis Love III 1pt each-way @ 45/1 bet365
Steve Flesch 1pt each-way @ 66/1 Skybet
