Verizon Heritage Tips

Ross Aylward - 13 Apr 2010

It's the week after the Masters so it must be the Verizon Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, the event's home since 1969.

The quality field is headed by recent winner Jim Furyk, who just shades favouritism from Masters fourth KJ Choi and Paul Casey, who is looking to bounce back after missing the cut at Augusta. Ian Poulter is clearly feeling his Masters exertions as he has decided to have the week off.

As one of the shortest courses on Tour (6,973 yards), the emphasis this week is on precision iron play into the tiny Bermuda greens so, for the winner, think solid ball-striker rather than power-hitter. The weather is set fair all week.

Ross' Three Off The Tee:-

Luke Donald @ 40/1 Sportingbet
Form from the last couple of weeks goes out the window here as Harbour Town is a completely different animal to Augusta and Redstone before that. For that reason, I'm prepared to forgive Donald his pair of MCs over the past fortnight, especially as his game looked in great nick previously with a second at Riviera and sixth in the Transitions Championship. Granted, he doesn't win as often as he should, but he went close here 12 months ago and he's in better form this time round. That 40/1 won't last either.

DJ Trahan @ 35/1 Boylesports
Didn't play last week so will be as fresh as paint and, in his current form (not finished worse than 17th in his last five starts), he will be chomping at the bit to get out on course again. Currently seventh on Tour in Ball Striking and third in Greens in Regulation Percentage, he has the game to thrive here so it's slightly surprising he hasn't done better in the past, although top-30 efforts in two of his last three starts isn't too shabby either. Nor is his price.

Heath Slocum @ 70/1 Totesport
You might have seen Slocum's name on the Masters leaderboard on Sunday after a blistering start to his final round. He got to five under at one point before slipping back into a tie for 18th, which was still a cracking effort, and he should do even better this week. Ranked 21st in Greens in Regulation (7th at Augusta) and 19th in Total Birdies (only eight players made more than him last week), he clearly has the tools to conquer Harbour Town and is a far better player now than when finishing runner-up here on his debut in 2002, which all makes the 70/1 very appealing indeed.

Bubbling Under: Kevin Na (45/1 Blue Square)
Forget his MC last week as he's another who will be much better suited to this week's track and he could well improve on his fourth here in 2007, the third time he's made the top-20.

Punters Beware: KJ Choi
Any player who were in serious contention last week should be avoided like the plague as mental letdown is almost inevitable, not to mention the physical strain. Besides, Augusta and Hilton Head are like chalk and cheese.
