WGC Cadillac Championship 2012 Day Two betting tips

A charge is expected from Rory McIlroy on Day Two of the 2012 WGC Cadillac Championship but the value could be on his playing partner Luke Donald.

The opening day of the WGC Cadillac Championship proved to be exceptionally tough with windy conditions making scoring very difficult and many of the big names struggled to put together good rounds.

Friday's conditions are expected to be similar to Thursday and it will be a case of sensible play winning out over big hitting and that means that Luke Donald could be a player to watch out for. The former world number one missed last week's Honda Classic but he looked in top form for the opening 16 holes at the Blue Monster on Thursday and would be just one shot off the pace set by Adam Scott if he hadn't finished bogey-double bogey in the final two holes.

Nonetheless, two under par is a good score from the Englishman and he looks a good bet to once against outscoring playing partners Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood in round two. The presence of the in-form McIlory skews the odds and Donald should not be 2/1 at Boylesports to shoot the best round of the trio, particularly after beating the Northern Irishman by three strokes and Westwood by six on the opening day.

Another player who benefits from playing with a 'star name' is Nick Watney. The American is the reigning champion at Doral and his opening round of 71 was a fair start to his title defence. He partners Tiger Woods, who didn't have the easiest days on Thursday and Sergio Garcia, who had a nightmare 75, and he could be value to come out on top in that three ball. Watney is 9/4 at Betfred to be the best of his grouping and, having achieved that on day one, he will be confident of managing that.

The final bet on day two comes in the last grouping where Retief Goosen should be able to outscore both Rickie Fowler and Ian Poulter. Poulter was diagnosed with pneumonia last week and shouldn't really be playing in Miami and his opening 76 illustrated this fact. Fowler is one of the PGA Tour's brightest hopes but he hasn't been at his best in recent weeks and he struggled badly in the wind yesterday. He is way off the pace after a 74 and his impetuous nature may see him try to claw that back and come unstuck once more today.

Goosen, by contrast, is a double US Open winner and is one of the most composed golfers on the tour. The South African was, like Fowler, two over par on Thursday but he came home well with a birdie at 12 followed by six pars and it looked like he had come to terms with the windy conditions. A steady round near par should be enough to see him win his three ball and odds of 15/8 at Ladbrokes are worth a play on the Iceman.

Recommendations - Friday Three Balls

Luke Donald (2/1, Boylesports)
Nick Watney (9/4, Betfred)
Retief Goosen (15/8, Ladbrokes)
