Wales Open: Singh Can Hit the Right Note

Ross Aylward

Bookmakers make Ross Fisher favourite at 11/1, but preference is for the Indian golfer at double those odds.

Former Ryder Cup players are thin on the ground at this week's Wales Open, but 2010 Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin are both taking part - Skybet make Monty 4/5 favourite in a tournament match, with Pavin at 11/10.

The Course: Twenty Ten Course, Celtic Manor Resort, Wales (par-71, 7,378 yards)
As the name suggests, the course was designed for the 2010 Ryder Cup and was first used for this event last year, when Scott Strange was a runaway winner (22 under par). While the Aussie can hardly be described as a bomber, it's hard to believe big hitters don't enjoy an advantage on this long track. There are four par-5's - the 2nd, 9th, 11th and the beast that is the 613 yard 18th.

Ross Top Tip: Jeev Milkha Singh @ 22/1 Boylesports
Bookmakers make Ross Fisher favourite at 11/1, which is understandable as he's in good form and finished tied-tenth here last year, but preference is for the Indian golfer at double those odds. Singh shared tenth spot with Fisher, but that doesn't tell the true story as he started in blistering form, opening with a 65 before dropping back. This year, he's mixed it with the best finishing fourth in the prestigious CA Championship at Doral and arrives here on the back of an each-way finish in the European Open, so the omens are good for another big week.

Next Best: Stephen Dodd @ 28/1 Coral
The Welshman was driving back to his Cardiff home last Friday evening when learning he had just made last week's cut, which makes his finishing position of fifth quite remarkable. Still, if you'd told me that at the start of the week, I wouldn't have battered an eye lid as the good results have just kept coming since the Andalucian Open - 14th there, sixth in China, 11th in the Spanish Open, and fourth place at Wentworth. There is no reason why it can't continue this week and victory on home soil would be oh so sweet.

Outsider: Rafa Echenique @ 100/1 Ladbrokes
The Argentinian played well enough to finish tied-14th in the Irish Open but, after missing his last two cuts at Wentworth and the London Club, I'm banking on him finding some inspiration from his tied-fourth here last year when shooting four rounds in the 60's. That's the chance you take if backing him but, at triple-figure odds, I reckon it's worth paying a little each-way to find out.

Ross' 72-Hole Match Bet: Corey Pavin to beat Colin Montgomerie @ 11/10 Skybet
