Formerly known as the ‘Greater Geensboro’, this is the last tournament before next week’s Fedex Cup Playoffs, and is being played at the Sedgefield Country Club for the first time since 1976. Brandt Snedeker is defending.
The Course: Sedgefield Country Club (par-70, 7,117 yards)
This is the only regular season tournament played on a Donald Ross-designed course, which may be significant as he was also the architect at Oakland Hills, the venue for last week’s USPGA Championship. Both are tree-lined with dog legs on several holes – no less than 12 this week – so will fit the eye of certain players. The greens are small and undulating. The two par-5’s are the 5th and 15th, the longest at 547 yards.
Ross’ Top Tip: Paul Casey @ 18/1 Skybet
For the above reason, it could be a decent strategy to stick with those players who did well at Oakland Hills last week, and Casey’s last day 69 caught the eye. That moved him up into a tie for 15th, his third consecutive top-15 finish on Tour, and he still believes he can make the Ryder Cup team by way of the world points list, so has plenty of incentive this week.
Next Best: Joe Ogilvie @ 50/1 Paddy Power
I’ve had my eye on Ogilvie as a potential winner for a while now, and this could be the week to catch him. This week’s track will certainly bring back some special memories as he albatrossed the 14th on his way to victory in the 1998 Greensboro Open, a Nationwide Tour event at the time. He was also eighth in the 2004 Chrysler Classic and 12th in 2006, so he clearly loves this event, and was sixth two starts ago.
Outsider: Kevin Streelman @ 100/1 William Hill
‘Kevin who?’, I hear you cry. Granted, he’s not exactly a household name, but seasoned golf punters might remember him from this year’s US Open, where he led after the first round. He faded to finish tied-53rd, but overall he’s been consistency on stilts this season, making his last nine cuts in a row. In this weak event, he could sneak into the frame at tasty odds.
Tournament Lay (Betfair): Vijay Singh
Singh hardly covered himself in glory when missing last week’s cut, and it’s questionable whether he’ll be up for this so soon.
Ross’ 72-Hole Match Bet: Joe Ogilvie to beat Kevin Sutherland @ 10/11 bet365
