American Johnson (3/1) made two eagles, six birdies and one bogey on the Pebble Beach course as a nine-under-par 63 put him alongside Danny Lee (20/1) and Charlie Wi (20/1), with the latter having shot 61 round the Monterey Peninsula course.

Ken Duke (40/1) and Brian Harman (66/1) are two shots behind them after shooting 64 at Pebble Beach, with Nick Watney (8/1), Josh Teater (50/1), Graham DeLaet (50/1) and Kevin Na (20/1) are two shots further back. Hunter Mahan (12/1) is among a group of five players that completed a five-under-par round on Thursday.

Former long-time world number one Tiger Woods (9/2) had a mixed day at Spyglass Hill, making six birdies and two bogeys as a four-under-par round meant he ended the day five shots behind the trio at the top of the leaderboard.

Both Padraig Harrington (66/1) and Phil Mickelson (33/1) are two-under after day one of this PGA Tour event, with Ian Poulter (100/1) a shot further back after he made two birdies and a bogey at Monterey Peninsula.
