The Northern Irishman (5/2 Tournament Winner) shot seven birdies and two bogeys on day one to go into the second round on five-under, and he is joined on that score by Robert Karlsson (12/1) after the Swede had threatened to upstage the big guns on Thursday.
Gareth Maybin (50/1), Richard Finch (50/1)and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet (66/1) are all four-under, with Richie Ramsay, Robert Rock and Nicolas Colsaerts a shot further back.
Former world number one Tiger Woods (7/1) is two-under after he made two birdies during his opening 18 holes of the tournament, with current number one Luke Donald (14/1) a shot behind after he made two birdies and a bogey.
But some other big names struggled to make an impact in round one. Graeme McDowell (66/1) and Lee Westwood (16/1) are among a raft of players that all completed their first round in par, while Martin Kaymer endured a miserable day with a double-bogey, four bogeys and one birdie leaving him five over.
