Whiteford, who share the lead after day one, was unable to match his first-round 66, but a four-under-par 68 was enough to put him alone at the summit. The Scot made an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys on Friday, and he holds a two-shot advantage over second-placed Prom Meesawat.
Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, Chapchai Nirat, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Kieran Pratt are all seven-under at the halfway stage, while Welshman Jamie Donaldson joins Soren Hansen, Thongchai Jaidee, Gregory Havret, Marcus Fraser, Marcel Siem and Shamim Khan, Thorbjorn Olesen and Anirban Lahiri on six-under.
Alejandro Canizares, who went into day two with a share of the lead, slipped to five-under after shooting a one-over-par 73. The Spaniard is joined on that score by a host of players including British trio Marc Warren, Jamie Moul and Rhys Davies, and Irishman Paul McGinley.
Veteran American John Daly, who shot a dismal seven-over-par 79 on Thursday, withdrew from the competition.
