Lee Westwood is confident his move to the United States can finally lead to a maiden Major title.

Ryder Cup star Westwood announced his plans to switch from the European Tour to playing full-time on the PGA Tour earlier this year.

Despite having one of the best records of anyone in big events over the last three seasons, the Englishman remains on the hunt for his first Major and he was a long way down the field at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham.

Westwood failed to recover from a poor opening round 73 to eventually finish on six-over-par and is looking forward to taking advantage of the impressive facilities that America boasts.

Westwood, who slipped to number four in the world this week, told ESPN: “I'm not doing it merely for the sake of it.

“I think playing over there on their courses all the time, with those kind of practice facilities and the right kind of weather, should have a big effect considering three of the four Majors are played there.”

Westwood and world number one Luke Donald's failure to lift the famous Claret Jug at the weekend means Nick Faldo remains the last Englishman to win a Major title at the 1996 Masters.

But Donald believes he is getting closer to his ultimate aim and is relishing the prospect of next month's US PGA Championship after finishing joint fifth at Royal Lytham.

He said: “I'll leave this week knowing that my game is definitely good enough to win Majors. It's a big step forward for me from a few weeks back at the US Open.”

Donald is 14/1 with bet365 to break his Major duck with victory at the US PGA Championship, with Westwood 14/1 to do likewise. Open Championship runner-up Adam Scott is 28/1.
