Mickelson had put himself on course to win this PGA Tour event over the first three days, but a par-71 on Sunday meant he could not pull away from Keegan Bradley, who also shot 72. That round, which consisted of four birdies and four bogeys, also allowed Haas to join him on seven-under thanks to a round of 69.
The trio returned to the 18th for their first play-off hole and all completed it in par, but it was Haas who clinched the title at the next extra hole, the 10th. Haas sent his tee-shot into the rough but recovered by chipping onto the green, and he then made a huge putt from 40 yards to edge out his rivals.
Haas told PGATour.com: “If you would have told me seven-under at the beginning of the day (would be enough to win), I didn't think that would be enough.
“But it was playing tough. I think that's a pretty common wind here, but it was enough that when you were into the wind it made a big difference. It was a cool breeze. It made it difficult to get balls close today.
“The greens are somewhat firm. I don't know if y'all saw that, but the balls were really bouncing and it was difficult to get balls close, so par was a good score most of the day.”
