American Mahan (2/1 Tournament Outright) was in fine form on day two in Maryland, reeling off seven birdies and just one bogey as his 65 improved him to seven-under for the tournament, two shots ahead of Brendon de Jonge (14/1), Jimmy Walker (22/1) and Robert Garrigus (10/1).
Mahan said afterwards: “I hit a lot of good shots. I hit so many fairways and greens, I made it easy on myself.
“This is a pretty punishing golf course if you get off line a little bit, and swinging well, I hit a lot of good shots.”
Pat Perez (20/1), Seung-Yul Noh (14/1), Rod Pampling (28/1), Stewart Cink (25/1)and Vijay Singh (16/1) all share fifth place on four-under through 36 holes, while Cameron Tringale (33/1) surged up the leaderboard to three-under by notching seven birdies and one bogey in his impressive second-round 65.
Tiger Woods (9/2) is looming large after he saved the best for last. The former world number one, who shot a one-over-par 72 on day one, bounced back from a first-hole bogey with two birdies on the front nine, and his eagle at the par-five 16th saw him climb further up the leaderboard, leaving him two-under at the midway point of the tournament.
Woods said afterwards: “I was consistent most of the day.
“I made a couple good par saves at 13 and 14, and I made a big putt there at 16. It was just one of those days.”
Defending champion Nick Watney (66/1) dropped to even-par with his one-over-par outing on Friday.
