David Toms and Chez Reavie share a one-stroke advantage following the first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Toms showed no hangover from last weekend’s play-off defeat at The Players Championship as he and fellow American Reavie ended the day just ahead of Rickie Fowler.

Starting at the 10th, Toms picked up his first shot of the day at the par-four 12th and he birdied every other hole to reach the turn at four-under.

The 44-year-old he showed no signs of slowing down on his back nine, making two successive birdies at one and two before completing an eight-under-par 62 with two more at seven and nine.

Reavie was in just as a good a form as he began his challenge with successive birdies at his first two holes, and he added two more before his inward nine, where he picked up another four shots to join Toms at the summit.

Fowler is alone in second place, but he could have led heading into day two after making an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey on his first 17 holes.

However, on the brink of a course record at the ninth hole the 22-year-old sent his drive the wrong side of the bunkers before finding the water hazard with his approach shot, and that meant he had to settle for a double-bogey that meant he ended the day on seven-under.
