Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial preview

Jason Day is the bookmakers’ favourite heading into this weekend’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Forth Worth, Texas.

The major names may be missing at Colonial CC but there is still a strong, competitive field and that is reflected in the odds given by the bookies, with Day the current 16/1 favourite with StanJames.com.

The 23-year-old Australian has been in fine form this year with five top-10 finishes, and he comes into this tournament on the back of some impressive displays at the Masters Tournament, The Heritage and The Players Championship, in which he shared second place, ninth place and ninth place, again, respectively.

The highest ranked player heading to the Colonial GC is world number 10 Matt Kuchar and he is 25/1 (StanJames), while David Toms will be looking to put last Sunday’s disappointment behind him and is 35/1 (Boylesports) to bounce back from his play-off loss to KJ Choi at the Players Championship.

Defending champion Zach Johnson can be backed at 22/1 (Victor Chandler), as can Hunter Mahan (SkyBet) having shared sixth place at last week’s Players Championship, while South African Rory Sabbatini can be backed at 33/1 (Betfred).

Mark Wilson is enjoying his best ever year on the PGA Tour having already registered victories at the Sony Open in Hawaii and Waste Management Phoenix Open, but the 36-year-old is out at 100/1 (bet365) to add a third title, while Scotland’s Martin Laird, winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, is 45/1 (Victor Chandler) to secure his second championship.

Kenny Perry can be backed at 125/1 (totesport) to make it a hat-trick of victories at this event, but he has struggled this season with his tied 39th-placed finish at The Players Championship his best performance of 2010.
