Wyndham Championship 2012 - Sergio Garcia aims to boost Ryder Cup bid

Sergio Garcia leads a trio of European golfers aiming to boost their 2012 Ryder Cup automatic qualification hopes in this week’s Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

Taking place at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, this is the last PGA Tour event before the FedEx Cup play-offs begin – a series of four tournaments restricted to the top 125 in the points standings with the field sizes gradually whittled down.

Garcia, Nicolas Colsaerts and Fredrik Jacobson are all in the field for the Wyndham Championship and the world ranking points on offer could make all the difference to their hopes of playing in the 2012 Ryder Cup, which Jose Maria Olazabal’s team are a best-priced 6/4 with Blue Square to win outright.

With the top 10 qualifying automatically in a fortnight's time, Garcia and Colsaerts currently stand 11th and 12th in the standings but damaged their chances by missing the halfway cut in the US PGA Championship.

Jacobson is 20th in the table but still close enough to be a contender as the race enters the final straight.

His fellow Swede Peter Hanson, eighth in the standings, asked for an invitation to the Wyndham but it was Colsaerts who got one.

Last year’s Wyndham Championship was won by Webb Simpson, who went on to finish second in the 2011 FedEx Cup series to Bill Haas and captured his first Major title at this year’s US Open.

Simpson and Haas are in the Wyndham field along with two-time 2012 PGA Tour winner Jason Dufner, US PGA Championship challenger Carl Pettersson and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.
