Rookie Keegan Bradley clinched his maiden PGA Tour title with a shock play-off victory at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

The 24-year-old overcame strong winds at TPC Four Seasons Resort to be one of only nine players to card below-par rounds, and he then edged fellow American Ryan Palmer at the first extra hole to seal a memorable victory.

Bradley said afterwards: “I can’t believe this has just happened. This is a dream come true.”

Having completed a two-under-par final round Bradley was denied victory in regulation by a last-hole birdie from Palmer, whose two-over-par 72 was enough to force a play-off with both men three-under after 72 holes.

The pair returned to the 18th and both men hit their tee-shots into the trees, but it was Palmer who made the first mistake by pulling his second shot into the water. Bradley capitalised by just avoiding the water before hitting a nice shot onto the green, and he holed from two feet to ensure the victory.

Ryuji Imada had looked on course to take the title when he entered his final four holes with a two-shot lead, but the Japanese putter came unstuck with a bogey at the 15th before missing a three-foot putt at the 17th. And a bogey at the last left him two-under for the tournament alongside Joe Ogilvie.

Sergio Garcia’s bid to win his first title on the tour since 2008 came to a disappointing end with a seven-over-par final round. The Spaniard had entered Sunday just one shot off the lead but he racked up six bogeys and one double-bogey as he plummeted down the leaderboard to finish three-over.
