Donald (40/1 Tournament Outright) arrived at Hilton Head looking to put his US Masters disappointment behind him, but the world number one slumped to four-over with just one birdie in a round that featured a double-bogey and three bogeys.

That round leaves him some way behind the American trio of Campbell (16/1), Taylor (20/1) and Knost (33/1), who ended the day atop the leaderboard following four-under-par rounds. Jim Furyk (5/1 favourite) is a shot behind them after he made five birdies and two bogeys to earn a share of second place on three-under, alongside Charlie Wi (25/1), Harris English (25/1) and Matt Every (40/1).

Blake Adams (66/1), John Mallinger (40/1) and Chez Reavie (50/1) are tied on two-under heading into Friday’s second round, while the likes of Rory Sabbatini (50/1), Joe Durant (80/1) and John Daly (80/1) are among a large contingent that shot one-under-par 70s on day one.

Rising American star Rickie Fowler (40/1) toiled on day one as he failed to build up some consistency on the Harbour Town Golf Links course. He experienced a rollercoaster day that featured four birdies, a double-bogey and three bogeys as he finished one-over after the first 18 holes.

Padraig Harrington’s (80/1) day was even worse as a solitary birdie and four bogeys led to a three-over round.
