Kuchar bogeyed his opening hole and at one stage found himself three shots behind fellow American Kevin Na, but he registered four birdies between the fourth and 16th to overtake the leader and go three shots clear. A bogey at the notorious 17th did not prove costly, as his two-under-par round was enough to give him a winning total of 13-under.

Kuchar said afterwards: “It is an amazing feeling.  You think of this (tournament) as one of the strongest fields in golf.  To come out as the champion is just an amazing feeling. 

“I think one of the things that strikes me is walking every day through the champion's tunnel.  Every player does it, and for me I can't help but stop and gaze at all the photos going through champions tunnel. To think I'm going to be a part of that with Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino and Raymond Floyd and Phil Mickelson and David Duval and Tiger Woods, it's all the best of the best. 

“To feel like I'm going to see my picture up there next year is pretty cool.”

Scotland’s Martin Laird and American trio Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Ben Curtis all shared second place on 11-under, while Luke Donald missed out on the chance to become world number one once more by finishing alone in sixth on nine-under.

Tiger Woods finished one over after a one-over final round, and the American told reporters: “I felt that I (played) well in spurts again – I just need to be a little bit more consistent.”
