Shell Houston Open betting tips - Tournament preview

The Shell Houston Open takes place from March 29 to April 1 and defending champion Phil Mickelson will be looking to claim a victory to give him a confidence boost ahead of the 2012 US Masters.

Phil Mickelson will be the big draw at the 2012 Shell Houston Open with 'Lefty' looking to retain the title he won in Humble, Texas last year and give his form a boost ahead of the upcoming US Masters.

The three times Masters winner heads an open looking field that is missing Arnold Palmer Invitational champion Tiger Woods and also doesn't feature either Rory McIlroy or world number one Luke Donald. It does, however, contain Lee Westwood and the Englishman would love to claim a victory to show that he is a real contender at Augusta.

Westwood is arguably the best player never to win a major tournament and he frequently shows up with the best form on offer, only to miss out on the final day. That could well be the case at the Masters and it would be no surprise to see the 38-year-old blitz the field at the Shell Houston Open and then fail to make his mark in the Masters.

The other players of interest at Redstone are WGC Accenture Match Play champion Hunter Mahan, who is in fine form this season, and Keegan Bradley. Last year was the American's rookie season on the PGA Tour yet he won four titles, including the USPGA Championship. The 25-year-old is destined for a wonderful career and his no nonsense style will see him come very close at the Shell Houston Open this week.
