Fredrik Jacobson held his nerve to earn a maiden PGA Tour title with a one-shot victory at the Travelers Championship.

The 36-year-old Swede went into the final day with a single-shot advantage and he held off his rivals with a four-under-par 66 to win with a score of 20-under through 72 holes.

Jacobson wins tournament

Jacobson started well with three birdies on the front nine before making his first bogey of the tournament at the 10th, but he bounced back with further birdies at the 12th and 14th and that was enough to land him the title in his 188th start on this tour, although John Rollins and Ryan Moore pushed him close.

Rollins shot a superb bogey-free 63 featuring seven birdies as he finished the tournament 19-under, and fellow American Moore would not be outdone as he also shot a 63. However, the 28-year-old will be kicking himself for missing a four-foot putt for par at the 18th that would have ensured a play-off with Jacobson.

Despite the pair’s last-day charge, it was Michael Thompson who carded the best score of the day, shooting nine birdies and a bogey in a sensational eight-under-par 62 that was enough for him to take fourth place on 18-under.

Thompson said afterwards: “This is my best (round of my career) so far.

“I had a nine-under in the only regular season event that I won. That came on the last day. I wasn't in the last group, and I won that event. So this one and that one, probably the two best.”
