Adam Scott is the first round leader of the WGC Cadillac Championship after an impressive opening round of 66 at the Blue Monster while world number one Rory McIlroy is seven shots behind after finishing one over par.
Rory McIlroy made an inauspicious start to life as world number one, shooting a one over par 73 on the opening day of the WGC Cadillac Championship in Miami.
The Northern Irishman is seven shots behind early leader Adam Scott, who produced a round of six under par to tie for the first round lead with American Jason Dufner. Speaking after his first 18 holes at a windy Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Scott said:
"You know it's only a month until the Masters and this is the time you want to knuckle down and get involved."
Both Scott and Dufner produced a series of birdies on the front nine and then managed to maintain their level for the back nine to finish on six under, two strokes ahead of Tomas Bjorn and Charl Schwartzel.
"Obviously very satisfied with the round today, and in these blustery conditions," added Scott. "I took advantage of my good play the first 11 or 12 holes and then managed to kind of get it up-and-down here or there coming in."
One player who struggled with the conditions was Lee Westwood, who finished four over par on Thursday and it now looks almost impossible for the Englishman to claim the world number one spot this week. Luke Donald, who McIlroy usurped at the top of the rankings, fared slightly better and a two under par 70 keeps him in contention. Donald didn't play in the Honda Classic last week but will be keen to make an impression in Miami.
Tiger Woods bogeyed the 18th on Thursday to finish with a par 72. "It was just a difficult day," said the American, who watched playing partner Sergio Garcia struggle to a round of 75 on a day marked by a lack of real birdie opportunities.
