Wells Fargo Championship - Lucas Glover wins play-off on dramatic final day

Lucas Glover fended off Jonathan Byrd and Rory Sabbatini to win the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

South African Sabbatini’s sensational 65 on the final day was not enough for him to force a play-off with Glover,  but Byrd did join his fellow American on 15-under with a final-hole birdie, only to lose at the first extra hole at Quail Hollow.

Byrd came into Sunday with a one-shot lead but immediately surrendered that with a bogey at the par-four first, and his recovery with birdies at the sixth and seventh were soon wiped out with bogeys at his next two holes as his round threatened to collapse.

Another dropped shot at the 14th could have proved costly with Glover having made three birdies, an eagle and two bogeys prior to the same hole, but Byrd would have been relieved when Glover himself bogeyed the 14th.

Both men responded with birdies at the 15th and pars at 16 and 17, and Glover’s seven-footer for par on the 18th meant Byrd needed a birdie to force extra holes, and he obliged with a superb 14-footer to finish 15-under alongside his compatriot.

Byrd birdies 18th

Their duel resumed at the par-four 18th once more but the wheels came off as Byrd found the bunker on the right-hand side and then pulled his approach shot on his way to a costly bogey, and Glover remained composed to complete the hole in par to take the title.

Earlier in the day play was suspended as the PGA Tour paid tribute to golfing great Seve Ballesteros who passed away on Saturday.
