Sergio Garcia boosted his hopes of qualifying for the European Ryder Cup team by moving to the top of the leaderboard after the third round of the Wyndham Championship.

The 32-year-old Spaniard had five birdies and one bogey to card a round of 66 which gives him a one-shot advantage at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Garcia, a best-priced 7/2 favourite with SportingBet, is looking forward to the final round which he hopes will bring a victory that can lift him into the top 10 of the European Ryder Cup standings.

He said: “Obviously I’d love to be two or three shots better but I'm in a good situation.

“It will be a tough day, there's no doubt about it. A lot of very good players are behind me and trying to achieve the same thing.

“Hopefully I'll play well again and give myself a good shot at winning.”

Those in closest pursuit are Bud Cauley and South Africa’s Tim Clark, who fired 66 and 67 respectively in their third rounds.

Jason Dufner, Harris English and Sweden's Carl Pettersson are a further shot adrift.
