The South African, who surged to the summit with his sensational albatross at the par-five second, has been unable to put more breathing room between himself and the rest of the field. Oosthiuizen followed up a bogey at the par-three fourth with five straight pars, and he makes the turn with a slender lead over Bubba Watson and Peter Hanson.

Overnight Hanson has steadied the ship after a dismal start to the round, which saw him shoot bogeys at two of his first three holes. He is joined on seven-under by Watson, who rallied from a first-hole bogey with birdies at two and five to reach the turn in 35.

Phil Mickelson’s chances of winning this Major for a fourth time may have been ended by a triple-bogey at the par-three fourth. However, the American is not completely out of the battle after a birdie at the par-five eighth improved him to six-under through 63 holes, two shots behind Oosthuizen.

Padraig Harrington and Matt Kuchar are a shot further back on five-under, but Lee Westwood’s Major drought looks set to continue after the former world number one shot three birdies and three bogeys to remain four-under through 66 holes.
