British Open 2012 live scores - Adam Scott shoots 64 to lead The Open Championship

Adam Scott was seven under par after his first 16 holes at Royal Lytham & St Annes and the Australian would have been thinking about making history and becoming the first player ever to go below 63 at The Open.

Unfortunately Scott bogeyed the final hole but his round of 64, six under par, propelled him to the top of the leaderboard on the opening day of the 141st Open Championship and he may well prove hard to catch.

It was former world number one Tiger Woods who set the early pace at Royal Lytham & St Annes with the American going out in 30 shots, four under par. He wasn't able to maintain that pace and a dropped shot at the 15th put Woods back to three under.

His compatriot Zach Johnson was closest to Scott's impressive score with a 65 putting the 2007 Masters champion one shot behind the clubhouse leader. Paul Lawrie is also on five under and the players at the top of the leaderboard will be content with their scores as increasing winds are likely to make things more difficult for the players out in the afternoon.
