The John Deere Classic is the last PGA Tour event held before the Open championship in July.

It takes place on the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, to where it moved in 2000.

Up to 1998 it was mostly known as the Quad Cities Open, although it had a spell as the Hardee’s Classic between 1986 and 1994, having been inaugurated in 1971.

In 2005, the event generated much publicity and larger crowds for awarding 15-year-old female player Michelle Wie a sponsor’s exemption. Wie was one under par for the first two rounds but missed the cut by two strokes.

She returned in 2006 but that time failed to complete the first two rounds, withdrawing after 27 holes citing heat exhaustion.

Two players have won the John Deere Classic on three occasions. D A Weibring did so in 1979, 1991 and 1995, but the performance of Steve Stricker is more remarkable.

In 2011, Stricker completed a back-to-back hat-trick and also holds the tournament record score, a 26-under-par total of 258 achieved in 2010.

It meant Stricker became only the third golfer in 30 years to win the same PGA Tour event three years in a row after Tiger Woods (in six different tournaments) and Stuart Appleby (Tournament of Champions).
